Osteoporosis symptoms

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become porous, brittle and weak, making them susceptible to fractures.  It arises because of a loss of bone mineral, leading to loss of bone mass or density.

Osteoporosis is referred to as the silent thief because bone loss can occur slowly for many years without symptoms until a sudden strain, bump, or fall causes a bone  fracture. It most commonly affects bones in the hip, spine, or wrist. Once the bones have become weakened, osteoporosis may cause back pain, collapsed vertebrae, loss of height, and spinal deformities.

There are usually a few contributing factors.  One of the main causes of osteoporosis is deficiency of certain nutrients in the diet.  Osteoporosis has
several related causes, but too little calcium in the diet plays a big part in causing it. Increasing our intake of these nutrient may help in osteoporosis treatments or in slowing it down.

Calcium supplement tips

To maximize absorption, take no more than 500 mg of elemental calcium at one time and take with meals. Separate calcium-rich foods and supplements by two hours from iron supplements (calcium reduces iron absorption). Avoid drinking tea with meals, as the tannins in tea reduce calcium absorption.

A good quality bone protection supplement may also help to address the nutritional causes of osteoporosis.

Symptoms of Vitamin D3 Deficiency

Vitamin D3 also known as cholecalciferol is a hormone that has an important role in calcium and phosphorus metabolism. In fact, vitamin D3 is not a vitamin because the body can produce it.
Vitamin D3 synthesized by the body when exposed to ultraviolet light or obtained from dietary sources.

A vitamin D3 deficiency can lead to the development of certain diseases. An individual who does not have enough vitamin D3 in her blood may develop rickets, a disease that causes bones to become deformed.

If you are suffering from vitamin D3 deficiency your bones may become thin and brittle. People with a vitamin D3 shortage are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis. A deficiency in vitamin D3 can also cause chronic muscle weakness.

Cases when you might be deficient in Vitamin D3:

  • You have kidney or liver disease. You can’t convert Vitamin D3 into its more active forms.
  • You take corticosteroid drugs such as cortisone, prednisone, or dexamethasone for allergies, asthma, arthritis, or some other health problem. These drugs can deplete your Vitamin D3 level.
  • In addition to geographical and seasonal factors, UV light from the sun may be blocked by factors such as air pollution, clothing, and sunscreens. Under these conditions, vitamin D3 becomes a true vitamin in that it must be supplied in the diet on a regular basis.

The requirement for vitamin D3 is also dependent on the concentration of calcium and phosphorus in the diet, the physiological stage of development, age, sex, degree of exposure to the sun, and the amount of pigmentation in the skin

If you are under condition of vitamins D3 deficiency you should talk to your doctor about  Vitamin D supplements.

Vitamin D side effect

It is important to note that vitamin D created from sunlight on skin is not known to result in toxic levels. Levels of vitamin D produced from sunlight are self-adjusting.

This can result in bone loss and kidney stones. Long-term verconsumption of vitamin D can cause calcification of organs such as the heart, blood vessels, and the kidneys.
Hypervitaminosis D is a serious problem as it can result in irreversible calcification of the heart, lungs, kidneys, and other soft tissues. Therefore, care should be taken to detect early signs of vitamin D intoxication in patients receiving pharmacological doses.
Side effects of vitamin D include hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, thirst, polyuria, muscular weakness, joint pains, diffuse demineralization of bones, and disorientation.
One report of vitamin D intoxication occurred from drinking milk that had been fortified with inappropriately high levels of vitamin.
Vitamin D side effects are unlikely in healthy adults with supplement levels lower than 10,000 IU/day. The Food and Nutrition Board has established a very conservative tolerable upper intake level (UL) of 2,000 IU/day (50 mcg/day) for children and adults. The UL for infants up to one year of age is 1000 IU.
Side effects are possible only with supplemental forms of vitamin D and are rare.

Vitamin D deficiency symptoms

The main function of Vitamin D is regulating calcium and phosphorus to make bones strong. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. Vitamin D is also unusual because its most active form is one of the most powerful hormones in the human body.
Vitamin D can help strengthen your immune system in general.
In particular, you need it to make special white blood cells that fight off infections. According to recent studies, people who get a lot of Vitamin D from their food and supplements are much less likely to get colon cancer.

Sunlight exposure provides most people with their entire vitamin D requirement.
A deficiency of vitamin D makes it difficult for the body to keep enough calcium in the bloodstream.
A deficiency of vitamin D results in inadequate intestinal absorption and renal reabsorption of calcium and phosphate.
This ultimately leads to rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. The classical skeletal symptoms due vitamin D deficiency associated with rickets, that is, bowlegs, knock-knees, and curvature of the spine, and pelvic and thoracic deformities.
Symptom of Vitamin D deficiency is also enlargement of the bones, especially in the knees, wrists, and ankles.
Rickets also results in inadequate mineralization of tooth enamel and dentin. Under these conditions, vitamin D becomes a true vitamin, which indicates that it must be supplied in the diet on a regular basis.
The natural source of vitamin D is from sunshine. If you’re outside a lot in the nice weather, you probably store enough D’s to avoid of symptoms of vitamin D deficiency into the winter.

There aren’t that many other foods that naturally have Vitamin D. Beef liver, egg yolks, butter, fortified milk, salmon, sardines, and mackerel. Plant foods have almost none, but Vitamin D is added to a lot of breakfast cereals.
